Every now and then, St Patrick's Day falls on a Saturday thereby inspiring many who would otherwise not participate in celebrating the Irish patron saint's day, to do so.
Auckland City Police are expecting tomorrow will see more than the usual number of people taking advantage of the forecast good weather to celebrate theirs - or their neighbour's - heritage.
In the lead up to March 17, Police have liaised closely with owners of licensed premises who, as part of their planned celebrations, are taking additional steps to ensure the safety of their patrons. Many licensed premises visited have assured Police they will provide extra security.
Also, more Police than usual have been rostered for duty tomorrow and will be patrolling the city monitoring the day's activities. Participants in organised or ad-hoc events or gatherings are encouraged to behave in a manner that keeps themselves, their families and their friends safe while still enjoying the spirit of St Patrick's Day.
Some tips for a safe and enjoyable St Patricks’ Day
• Consider celebrating at home with friends to avoid the crowds
• Where possible, use public transport or travel with a sober driver to get around the city so as to avoid the temptation to drink and drive and to reduce levels of traffic congestion
• Don’t over-indulge on alcohol, drink in moderation and ensure you eat regularly throughout the day.
• Avoid accepting drinks from people you don't know
• Be aware of the city Liquor Ban areas, particularly those in the Central Business Area where drinking in in public is an offence.
