1 min read

Western Waikato Police investigating a fatal crash near Maramarua early this morning are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Sergeant Juliet Burgess of the Huntly Strategic Traffic Unit said emergency services were called to the scene of the crash on SH2 by the intersection with Steen Rd, about 4.10am.

"The crash involved a southbound Scania truck and trailer unit and a northbound Toyota Corolla car.

"When they arrived there was no-one who witnessed the crash present and the person who we understand phoned 111 was a visitor from overseas and we haven't been able to get through on their cell phone."

SH2 was closed until shortly before 9.30am to allow Serious Crash Unit and Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit inspectors to carry out a scene examination.

The as yet to be identified male driver of the Toyota was killed in the crash while the driver of the truck was shaken but unhurt.

"At this time we are working to establish what caused the head-on collision and there may be someone out there who hasn't already spoken to Police who may be able to shed some light on what has occurred."

Anyone with any information on this morning's crash is asked to contact Huntly Police on 07 828 7560.
