Wanganui Police have launched a homicide inquiry following the death of a two year old girl in a drive by shooting last night.
They are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which occurred in the suburb of Gonville at approximately 10 pm, to come forward to assist them.
Inspector Duncan MacLeod, Area Commander for Wanganui Police says the shooting is a tragedy for all concerned.
"An innocent child is now the victim of tit-for-tat retaliation between rival gangs.
This incident confirms the worst fears of Police and the community about the ongoing gang conflict in the area.
Inspector MacLeod says a number or people were at the Gonville address when several vehicles drove past and shots were fired in the direction of the front of the house.
"Unfortunately a two year old girl was asleep in the front of the house and was struck by one of the bullets. She died at the scene," he says.
"We would like any one with information about this tragic event to contact us by telephoning Wanganui Police on 06 3490600 as soon as possible.
He says Police are concentrating early inquiries on door to door interviews in the area.
A full scene examination will commence when specialist staff, including forensic experts, arrive later this morning.
Additional Police staff are being brought in from outside Wanganui, boosting the inquiry team to around 30 staff and also to provide high visibility Policing.
