Waihi Police are seeking the public's assistance in locating the persons responsible for a suspicious fire in the town early yesterday morning.
Detective Simon Everson of the Waihi CIB said serious property damage was only averted by the quick actions of the occupants of the Mataura Rd address.
"In what appears to be a completely random attack, our victims heard what they describe as a young, teenage, male's voice near where the fire started about 2.40am and also heard people running off.
"We can confirm an accelerant was used to initiate the blaze, which damaged the garage of the property and are looking into want type of container and initiator was used."
Mr Everson said emergency services were called at the time and despite an extensive area search by Police no persons were located.
"At this stage we are appealing to the public for information on who may have been responsible and especially ask parents who may noticed their children's clothing smelling of petrol either on the Sunday or today to contact us.
"We would also like to speak to anybody who may have seen any young persons around the area of the Waihi East School in the early hours of Sunday Morning."
Anyone with information is asked to contact Mr Everson at the Waihi Police Station on 07 8638179, alternatively information can be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
