Hamilton Police have a message for those who believe they can get away with assaulting their staff; they can't and those who do can expect to face the full extent of the law.
The message comes following the assault on a Constable who attended a car for help from a Claudelands property early this morning.
Shift Manager, Senior Sergeant Mike Underwood, said officers were called to reports of a person trespassing at a Pearsons Ave address around 5am.
"A 28-year-old man was identified as the offender and in the process of arresting this person and removing him from the address the man has assaulted one of our constables, striking him in the head.
"Additional staff arrived and the offender was taken into custody. The officer was taken to Waikato Hospital for treatment of what appears to be a broken nose and possible concussion."
Mr Underwood said the offender has been charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest and is expected to appear in the Hamilton District Court later today.
"Police obviously take such incidents very seriously and people involved in such behaviour can expect a robust response from Police and the judiciary.
"Although assaults while going to the aid of other persons could be considered part of a policeman's lot that does not make them acceptable and we need to ensure people understand they will not be tolerated."
