Driver to face further charges in Hamilton car bonnet death

1 min read

Hamilton Police investigating the death of a student in the City two weeks ago have charged a driver with manslaughter as they consolidate their investigation.

Already facing a charge of failing to stop or ascertain injury, the officer in charge of the enquiry into Warren DEANE'S death, Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Andy Bu Bear, said the 62-year-old driver has now been charged with manslaughter.

Mr DEANE died in Waikato Hospital last Tuesday following an incident where he is understood to have suffered critical head injuries after falling off the bonnet of the driver's car as it was being driven on Hamilton East's Naylor St on 06 October.

Born in New Zealand Mr DEANE had been raised in the United Kingdom before returning to study at Waikato University in 2005.

Family arriving from Britain are receiving Victim Support to help them through their ordeal.

Mr Bu Bear said the family had asked for privacy as they prepare for his funeral on Tuesday.

The driver of the vehicle, who was granted interim name suppression at his last court appearance, is expected to appear in the Hamilton District Court today on the new charge.
