The Central Police District traffic support unit was busy this weekend with specialist traffic staff attending two fatal motor vehicle crashes and breath-testing a large number of motorcyclists leaving the Cold Kiwi Rally.
Two drivers died after separate crashes on SH57 near Tokomaru on Saturday evening, and SH2 near Woodville, on Sunday morning.
On Sunday morning motorcyclists leaving the Cold Kiwi Rally in Ruapehu and travelling in both directions on SH4 between Waiouru and Ohakune were surprised to find themselves subjected to compulsory breath testing by the Traffic Alcohol Group (TAG) from Palmerston North.
More than 800 vehicles were stopped of which approximately 600 were motorcyclists leaving the rally. Unfortunately four riders will be facing charges of driving with over the limit.
“It’s a pity that some riders were irresponsible enough to drink too much at the rally and then drive afterwards,” said Senior Sergeant Nick Dobson of the Central District Traffic Support Unit. “This minority let down the majority who acted responsibly” he added.
There were also about a dozen riders who came close with alcohol in their systems but were under the legal limit.
Central District Police staff will continue to pay very close attention to any gatherings or events where alcohol is consumed in an attempt to keep the road toll down.
