Following notification of next of kin, Police have released the names of the three people involved in a head-on crash between a car and four-wheel drive utility on State Highway One.
The crash happened today at approximately 1pm, about 5km north of Oamaru.
The driver of the car was Margaret Jane Hubbard, aged 82, and her passenger was Allan James Hubbard, aged 83, of Timaru.
The driver of the four-wheel drive utility was Andrew John Earl, aged 40, of Nelson.
A serious crash investigator has completed a scene examination and the investigation is continuing. It could take a number of weeks. Oamaru Police have already spoken to some witnesses but are still keen to hear from anyone who saw the crash.
State Highway One has been closed for most of the afternoon. Police expect it to re-open by approximately 7pm.
Mr Earl was assessed at Oamaru Hospital and discharged with cuts and abrasions.
Mrs Hubbard sustained fracture injuries and was taken to Dunedin Hospital by ambulance.
Mr Hubbard sustained multiple injuries and has been flown by helicopter to Dunedin Hospital.
