Canterbury police are urging to motorists to remain cautious after the region experienced heavy snowfall over the past 24 hours, and with more forecast to fall in the next day or so.
"While we have been dealing with loose snow on the roads today, we anticipate that the wet conditions will freeze overnight and we will be faced with icy roads in the morning," says Inspector Al Stewart, Canterbury Road Policing Manager.
Police are advising road users to assess their local road conditions prior to travelling and to stay at home or delay any non-essential travel where possible.
People working for emergency and essential services should turn up to work as usual where they can do so safely.
Employees should check with their employers if in any doubt over travelling to work.
"We're warning drivers that, unlike today where the snow was a clearly visible hazard, there will be large areas of ice on the roads tomorrow, especially in rural and shaded areas, that you will not be able to see," says Inspector Stewart.
"While most people have taken these messages on board and stayed off the roads, or adjusted their driving to the conditions, it has been disappointing to see a few undertaking some dangerous activities, such as towing snowboards behind vehicles. This is not only illegal, but really dangerous," says Inspector Stewart.
Police are urging road users that do drive, to drive to the conditions. Slow down, extend your following distances and get to where you are going safely.
A total of eight motor vehicle crashes had been reported to Christchurch police between 06:00am and mid-afternoon, mostly of a minor nature with no serious injuries reported.
