The apprehension of one offender by a member of the public and the arrest of another by an injured Constable is testament to the value of partnerships between Police and the community according to the Waikato's District Commander.
Superintendent Win van der Velde said this afternoon's events began in the Bombay area of South Auckland where a property owner disturbed thieves on his property.
"Two stolen cars, a Subaru and a V8 Holden utility have fled the scene, heading towards the Hauraki Plains where they were seen by a Police patrol car.
"The Police Northern Communications Centre managed the response in trying to locate the fleeing drivers, one of who crashed his car in Paeroa."
Mr van der Velde said after the driver of the Subaru crashed the male driver attempted to flee the scene but he was apprehended by a member of the public.
"This is probably an extreme example of partnership between Police and the public but is an excellent portrayal of how by working together, the community can assist with preventing crime.
"Meanwhile the driver of the utility has sped towards Hamilton, all the while being observed by the Auckland based Police Eagle helicopter."
The car was seen entering the grounds of Waikato Hospital and responding Police units were coordinated to prevent the driver escaping.
"As the driver attempted to escape Police in his vehicle he has rammed an unmarked patrol car.
"Despite suffering rib injuries the driver of the patrol car has chased the offender as he attempted to flee and after a brief struggle he has managed to arrest him. I commend the officer for his dedication in this matter."
The injured officer was treated for his injuries at the Emergency Department of the hospital and released a short time later.
Two men are currently being interviewed by Police in relation to this afternoon's events and will appear in the Hamilton District Court tomorrow on a variety of driving and burglary charges.
