1 min read

Counties Manukau Police can confirm that the man who died while fleeing Police in a stolen vehicle on Monday afternoon was 20 year-old Caine Burgess, originally of Pukekohe but more recently of no fixed abode.

Mr Burgess died when he failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Patumahoe and Waiuku roads in Pukekohe at about 3pm and collided with another vehicle. The woman driver and sole occupant of the other vehicle miraculously escaped with only moderate injuries and is recovering in hospital.

As is standard procedure in cases such as these, three separate investigations are underway into the events leading up to the crash including the actions of all persons involved. The Independent Police Conduct Authority will maintain oversight of the Police investigation.

Detective Senior Sergeant Albie Alexander says 'Any loss of life as a result of a pursuit is a tragedy and the investigations will thoroughly examine the actions of all persons involved."

"It will be some months before the outcomes of these investigations are known."

"Victim Support is currently working with the families of both Mr Burgess and the driver of the other vehicle to support them through this tragic time."

"We are interested in hearing from anybody who has information about Mr Burgess' movements in the 24 hours before the crash which occurred at 3pm on Monday."

If you have any information that could help Police with their enquiries please contact Counties Manukau Police on 09 261 1300 and ask for Detective Senior Sergeant Albie Alexander. Alternatively, you can anonymously call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
