Sevens over for another year

1 min read

Wellington Police say 25 people were arrested and close to 100 others evicted from the Westpac Stadium during the two-day NZI Sevens.

Acting Inspector Jason Ross, Wellington Police, said it was a busy two days for officers.

"The crowds on both days were very good natured and no serious crime was "detected or reported to us," he said.

There were 25 arrests made, and 16 of those arrested will face charges in the Wellington District Court next week. The arrests were for disorderly behaviour (16), detoxification (3), breach of the peace (1), theft (2), trespass (1) and offensive behaviour (2).

"We evicted nearly 100 people over the two days for intoxification, and other behavioural offences including smuggling alcohol into the stadium, plus a range of other stadium policy breaches," Inspector Ross said.

"Most people heeded the police message to moderate their behaviour and respect other spectators. There were several instances of where alcohol was smuggled into the stadium and in one case a man who had a bottle of bourbon down his pants, fell over, smashing the glass bottle and causing a serious injury to his groin area."

Wellington city was fairly quiet on Friday night after the Sevens finished with only seven arrests between 10pm and 9am. Saturday night was very busy, particularly in Courtenay Place central city entertainment area.
