Tasman Police were out in force on the roads over Easter Weekend and are pleased to report there were no fatalities and no serious injury accidents.
Nationally there were five fatalities over the official holiday period.
Police across Tasman District, which covers all of Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast, breath tested more than 5000 drivers. Fourteen were found to have excess breath alcohol, with the highest reading being 1035mcg.
Just over 830 traffic infringement notices were issued, along with 588 speeding tickets. The highest speed recorded in a 100km zone was 144kmh.
Six people had their vehicles impounded.
The speed camera also had a busy weekend and processed 1050 photos of speeding drivers.
Tasman District Road Policing Manager Inspector Jenni Richardson said, while she was pleased the district had no fatalities, the fact that her road policing staff had issued 1420 infringement notices showed people were still not getting the message about the danger of speeding and drink driving.
"This is a huge amount of offending for our district over a four-day period," she said.
Inspector Richardson said Highway Patrol staff on the West Coast also apprehended a well-known offender for possession of cannabis for supply, possession of cannabis resin for supply, driving while disqualified, failing to stop and possession of a knife.
Highway Patrol in Marlborough arrested a man with two outstanding warrants to arrest. He was also charged with possession of cannabis.
"I want to acknowledge the great work done by all of my road policing staff this weekend. I am extremely pleased with their professional attitudes and commitment to keeping our roads safe," Inspector Richardson said.
