The process for reuniting vehicles extracted from the CBD with their owners has been passed from Police to the Christchurch City Council.
Police are no longer actively recovering vehicles from the CBD. Effective from Tuesday, 26 April, around 30 vehicles which have been recovered and yet to be reunited with their owners will be securely stored at the Christchurch City Council’s Sockburn Service Centre on Main South Road.
This transition from the police run operation to council takes place in the next 24 hours with the wrap up from the Hagley Park operation.
Owners who have been notified that their vehicles are awaiting collection, will from Tuesday, 26 April, need to pick them up from the Sockburn Service Centre during the hours of 9am to 5pm. Photo identification is required – such as a driver’s licence or passport; along with a document that supports vehicle ownership or a signed letter of authority if they are picking up the vehicle on behalf of the owner.
People who have queries about their vehicles can from Tuesday contact the Council’s Call Centre, telephone: 03 941 8999.
Senior Sergeant Graham Reeves, police Vehicle Recovery Team, said it’s been a huge but rewarding job to recover 5548 vehicles from the CBD and return most of them to their owners.
Police advise vehicle owners that no vehicle collections from Sockburn, or queries relating to the recovered cars and bikes, will take place during the Easter period. The customer service centre will be operating from Tuesday, 26 April.
