Police investigating the cause of a fatal car crash on the Southern Motorway last week, are focusing their attention on locating a black station wagon. The crash happened on Thursday 5 October 2006 at 8.00pm.
Constable Paul Hayward of the Serious Crash Unit says a six year old boy was killed in the crash. The boy was a passenger in a Grey Honda Saber that lost control and hit the left hand barrier, before coming to rest in a line of trees. Five other occupants, who were in the vehicle at the time, received minor to moderate injuries.
'Witnesses have reported that prior to the crash, the Honda vehicle was proceeding north-bound on the Motorway in lane three. At about the same time a Black Station Wagon with tinted windows and chrome wheels approached at speed in lane one. They say that the station wagon has then moved at speed, into lane two.'
"Police are currently investigating the possibility that the two vehicles may have touched during the manoeuvre," Constable Hayward said.
'The Honda has then lost control, resulting in the six year old being thrown from the vehicle. The boy died at the scene.'
Reports indicate that the manoeuvre of the black station wagon may have influenced the outcome of this crash. Police want to speak to all persons who witnessed this incident.'
"Enquiries into the whereabouts of the black station wagon will continue until we are able to talk to the driver and any occupants in the vehicle," said Constable Hayward.
