Several properties were searched by armed Police in Hamilton this morning as the investigation into the shooting of a Hamilton shopkeeper overnight continues.
Hamilton City Deployment Manager, Inspector Karen Henrikson, said the 58-year-old liquor store owner has undergone surgery in Waikato Hospital and is currently in a serious but stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit.
"The man suffered a gunshot wound to his right shoulder and also a fractured skull we believe was caused by a blow to the head with a hammer wielded by one of the two offenders who entered the store about 9.40pm.
"Our victim's adult nephew was also in the store at the time of the attack and though assaulted was not injured but he is obviously shaken by what has occurred."
Ms Henrikson said as a result of Police enquiries overnight several properties of interest were identified and searches carried out of homes in the suburbs of Dinsdale, Bader and Enderley this morning.
"Members of the Waikato Armed Offenders Squad supported the operation and distraction devices were used however no shots were fired.
"A number of people at the addresses have been spoken to today but to date no arrests have been made and we are still seeking information from the public on who may have been responsible for this cowardly attack."
Police are yet to speak to the store owner but have spoken to his family who are understandably shaken by what has occurred and who asked that their privacy be respected at this time.
The storeowner is expected to have to undergo further surgery over the next 24 hours.
Anyone with any information on last night's events or the identity of those responsible is asked to contact Detective Constable Chris Wharton of the Hamilton CIB on 07 858 6200.
