The Area Commander for Waitakere Police says while there's been some increase in recorded crime in the area during the 2005/2006 financial year, the results that have been achieved by staff, particularly in containing violent offences is satisfying.
In the 2005/2006 financial year ending 30 June 2006, there were a total of 18,839 offences recorded, compared to 17,458 for the previous year. The Waitakere Area has solved a total of 49% of all these crimes.
Inspector Mark O'Connor says this resolution rate is a particularly pleasing result. It is testimony to the professionalism demonstrated by all Waitakere Police staff, and to the valuable assistance police receive from all stakeholders in our large community.
"Violent offences have remained reasonably consistent over the past three years considering there has been continued population growth. Of particular note is the violence resolution rate of 87%. This achievement reflects the dedication of all CIB staff in the Waitakere Area," he said.
"Waitakere Police work very closely with community groups and key stakeholders to develop effective interventions to reduce all crime. The rapid population growth in Waitakere does however present many challenges for Police," Mr O'Connor said.
"Recorded drug offending in Waitakere has reduced over the last three years. While it is difficult to define the causes of these reductions in drug offending, Waitakere Police are working to direct youth away from drug use, and to develop effective interventions to reduce crime,"
"Reported car crime increases in Waitakere, reflect a National trend. In partnership with the Waitakere City Council through the Vehicle Crime Action Group, strategies have been put in place to reduce further opportunities for this type of offending to occur," Inspector O'Connor said.
