Hamilton Police assisted by Search and Rescue personnel have carried out a recovery operation on the Waikato River this afternoon after a member of the public advised them of what appeared to be a body floating in the water.
Acting Senior Sergeant Geoff Blow said the Hamilton Police Rescue Boat was used in the recovery of the body which was located near the park off Anne St about 2.15pm.
The body was taken to Waikato Hospital to allow a forensic examination and the formal identification process to take place.
Police said it was too early to confirm but it was likely the body was that of a man that had jumped from Claudelands Bridge into the river on 30 December.
"That person had been the subject of a search involving Search and Rescue personnel and the National Police Dive Squad for the past five days.
"Until this morning no-one had come forward with a nomination on the identity of the missing man however earlier today a family did contact us and we are working with them to establish whether the body recovered is that of their loved one."
An update on the identity of the person recovered is expected by tomorrow morning.
