Manslaughter charge follows Turangi death

1 min read

The man charged with careless use of a firearm causing death following the death of Rosemary Ives at Turangi last month, Andrew Mears, will now face an additional charge of manslaughter at his next court appearance in Taupo tomorrow (Thursday 18 November).

Members of the Taupo Police investigating the death of Ms Ives had referred the file to the Crown Solicitor at Rotorua to review the circumstances of the death. The main purpose of the review was to establish whether a more serious charge of manslaughter should be laid.

At the first court appearance for Mr Mears, Police sought a remand without plea on the original charge pending the recommendations of that legal opinion. That legal opinion has now been provided, and a new charge of manslaughter will be laid.

The officer leading the investigation, Detective Senior Sergeant Todd Pearce, says it was appropriate for Police to seek further advice about the level of charge, given the wider circumstances of the incident.

"The circumstances of Ms Ives death were different from what Police normally deal with in most hunting related incidents and deaths, so it was important that additional advice and review was sought.

"It is also appropriate that we consider the legal advice we receive, and act on it as we have in this instance."

NB:

The family of Ms Ives have been advised of the interest the media have in speaking with them. They have declined this opportunity at this stage and would appreciate further privacy until they have some certainty as to where the Court process will lead to. Given that this matter is still before the Court, Police are unable to make further comment or answer media questions about this incident until all Court matters have been concluded. Thank you.
