Offender sought for central Wellington bank robbery

1 min read

Wellington CIB is appealing for sightings of a man who robbed the Manners Street Branch of the BNZ in the central city about 4.15pm yesterday.

Detective Sergeant Tim Leith, Wellington CIB, said the offender is a male caucasian, aged about 30 years old, approximately 180cm tall and of average build. At the time of the robbery he was unshaven, smelt strongly of cigarettes, and was wearing a green beanie and a large swandri style jacket.

"The man had been waiting in line as a customer then approached the teller and handed over a note demanding money," Detective Sergeant Leith said.

"There was a brief exchange of words and about $6500 in cash handed over before the man left the bank."

Police don't know what direction the man took after leaving the bank. They're asking for sightings of a man matching the offender's description who may have been in the Manners Mall area between 3.30pm and 4.30pm yesterday to contact Wellington Police.

The teller was shaken but unhurt.
