1 min read

A man arrested by Police outside Marton yesterday afternoon will be appearing in court today charged with a variety of offences related to a series of serious domestic assaults.

Detective Senior Sergeant Karl Thornton of the Hamilton CIB said the 25-year-old man was arrested by Waikato detectives with the assistance of the Wanganui CIB and Marton staff.

"The man, a patched member of a N.Z. Adult Gang faces 14 charges in relation to events in the Waikato over recent weeks in which his estranged partner was subjected to prolonged physical and psychological abuse.

"In this case the victim was able to escape and seek assistance, something Police encourage all victims of domestic violence to do. An indication of how serious Police take the issues of domestic violence and organised crime is the level of staffing and resources used throughout the North Island to capture this man."

Among the charges laid against the man are one charge of kidnapping, one charge of aggravated wounding, one charge of threatening to kill, one charge of assault with a blunt instrument, assault with intent to injure and assault and three counts of burglary.

Mr Thornton said a 19-year-old woman apprehended with the man at the rural property had not been charged.

"At this time no other person has been charged in relation to assisting this man while on the run however our enquiries are continuing."
