Offender's hopes for freedom flushed by Hamilton Police

1 min read

A man's hopes of avoiding arrest by hiding in a toilet were flushed by Hamilton Police early this morning following a high speed pursuit through quiet City streets.

Constable Myles O'Donnell said officers stopped the driver of a Nissan car on Ohaupo Rd for a vehicle fault about 3am.

"The driver gave false details but we were able to establish he was a 41-year-old disqualified driver who is due in court today.

"Before he could be taken into custody the driver sped off and a pursuit, managed by the Northern Communications Centre commenced."

Mr O'Donnell said the driver's speeds reached 120km/h on Beatty St before the driver locked his car's brakes and he slid straight through the intersection on to Normandy Ave.

"The chase continued on to Lorne St, back on to Ohaupo Rd and Normandy Ave before we lost him on Pine Ave, using a bit of local knowledge we tracked the car to a Lilac St house at which time the offender fled into the toilet and locked the door.

"He was told he was being arrested, eventually the toilet window was broken to allow officers access to the offender who was subdued and arrested with the assistance of pepper spray."

In addition to existing charges the man will now be facing additional charges of failing to stop, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and resisting police in the Hamilton District Court today.
