Hamilton Police investigating the stabbing of a woman in a domestic incident in Frankton overnight have carried out a letter drop appealing for witnesses and asking people to keep an eye out for potential weapons.
Detective Sergeant Andy Bu Bear of the Hamilton Family Violence Team said the letter drop was carried out because the man arrested for the stabbing of his estranged partner did not have a weapon on him when caught.
"The weapon used to stab the woman was described as a knife with a small silver blade 10-15cm in length; we don't know what the handle was made of.
"Sometime about 8pm a man left the Primrose St address where the stabbing took place. We believe he still had possession of the knife and some clothing and he may have hidden them somewhere on the street."
A scene examination and area canvas is still underway at the address where the attack took place. Part of the investigation involves forensic analysis of a car removed from the scene of last night's attack.
"The vehicle was found to have blood on it and as such is an item of interest, while this has been going on our victim has been interviewed in hospital and other witnesses are also being questioned."
Mr Bu Bear said the attacker is currently under arrest and being interviewed by detectives, he was arrested on the corner of Killarney Rd and Primrose St about 8.10pm.
"You may have seen this person on Primrose St around this time, if so we want to hear from you.
"We're asking residents to be aware of the possibility a knife and clothing may have been hidden or discarded on their property, if you find them or see anything else suspicious please leave them where we are and phone the Hamilton Police on 07 858 6200.
While investigators always prefer to speak to people with information directly Mr Bu Bear said there may be some people who felt more comfortable leaving information anonymously.
"If that's the case it's the information you have, not who you are that we want to know, in that situation we ask that you ring the Crimestoppers crimeline on 0800 555111."
