Hamilton Police investigating the suspicious death of a man whose body was found near a central city public toilet are appealing for sightings of the victim before his death.
Speaking at a press conference in the City this afternoon Waikato Investigations Manager, Detective Inspector Lance Burdett said the victim had yet to be identified.
"About 6am this morning the operator of a street sweeper informed Police he had found the body of a man near the river end of London St.
"The man is described as a male Caucasian with short grey hair, aged in his late 50s to early 60s who was wearing light tan pants, a light blue jacket with woollen sleeve cuffs, a dark brown jersey under his jacket and brown slippers."
Mr Burdett said injuries found on the victim did not appear to be the result of a fall and it was hoped his body would be able to be removed from the scene later today to allow a post-mortem examination to be carried out in Auckland to identify a cause of death.
"At this stage the man's death is being treated as suspicious and we are appealing for any sightings of the man last night in or around the area he was found. We also would like to speak to anyone who may have seen or heard an altercation involving a man matching our victim's description."
Mr Burdett said a scene examination was being carried out in conjunction with ESR forensics experts and an area canvas was currently underway as Police worked to identify the man.
"So far there have been no missing person reports received matching our victim's description.
"We would like to identify this man so that we can advise his family and are appealing for anyone with any information to contact the Hamilton CIB on 07 8586200."
Mr Burdett said while investigators would prefer to speak to people in the first instance, information could be left anonymously on the Crimestoppers crimeline, 0800 555111.
