Hamilton Police have launched an inquiry into a suspicious death following the discovery of a man's body outside a building in the City's central business district this morning.
Detective Inspector Lance Burdett of the Waikato CIB said a street sweeper operator located the man's body off London St, near some public toilets, about 6am.
"The man was found unresponsive, lying on his back with head injuries.
"A cordon has been set up at the intersection of London and Victoria Streets and around linking service lanes. A tent shelter has been set up to preserve evidence from the elements and a scene examination is currently underway."
Mr Burdett said there was nothing to indicate the man's death had anything to do with an international rugby match held in the City overnight and it was too early to speculate on a cause of death.
One focus of the inquiry team's investigation will be to formally identify the victim, something they hope to complete following an area canvas that commenced this morning.
"We are hopeful that the body will be able to be removed from the scene later today and it is expected a post-mortem will be carried out in Auckland to determine a cause of death.
"The man's death has been reported to the Coroner and at this point in time we are dealing with a suspicious death," he said.
