Police investigating the multiple wounding of a man who confronted thieves stealing his bike have completed one scene examination and are awaiting the arrival of forensic experts to complete another.
The 32-year-old man who suffered wounds to his neck, arms, head and torso, including an ear being bitten in half, has left hospital and is currently being interviewed by detectives.
Detective Sergeant Ricky Thompson said the examination of the scene at the victim's Albert St home had been completed and investigators were awaiting the arrival of an Auckland based ESR team to complete the examination of a MacFarlane St address.
"Enquiries have revealed the victim chased the offenders from Albert St to MacFarlane St and on to Onslow St where he confronted them before the group ended up in a physical altercation outside a MacFarlane St property.
"The property and occupiers of the MacFarlane St address had nothing to do with the events and they and other neighbours have been very cooperative with Police."
Mr Thompson said this morning's events highlighted the risks associated with confronting offenders.
"Police always recommend a victim's first course of action should be to raise the alarm via 111. Though very serious the incident played out early this morning could easily have had even more tragic circumstances that what occurred.
'Our advice in each instance is to ring 111 and allow those trained and equipped to deal with the situation."
