Hamilton Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward following an attack on a man could easily have resulted in a fatality.
Detective sergeant Ricky Thompson said the victim disturbed what is believed to be two men as they attempted to steal his bike from his Albert St home.
"Our 32-year-old victim chased what he believes to be two men to Macfarlane St where he confronted them in a driveway.
"A struggle has developed that left the victim with a stab wound to his neck in the area of his voice box, a wound to one of his hands, swelling to his jaw, a wound to his left temple and other superficial cuts to his torso.
"The man's left ear was also bitten in half but is still attached."
Mr Thompson said the struggle would have been very noisy and Police would like to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything in the vicinity around 12.45am.
"The only description we have of the offenders so far is one was a male Caucasian, about 180cm in height of medium build wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and jeans with a Justin Bieber style haircut.
'The offenders are believed to have had a black BMX bike with white handlebars with them."
