Police Commissioner Howard Broad has welcomed the appointment of Assistant Commissioner Viv Rickard as Deputy Commissioner.

"I am looking forward to Viv's continued contribution to policing and to working closely with him as part of the senior leadership team of NZ Police.

Viv brings considerable depth of experience to the Deputy Commissioner Resource Management role.

"In a career spanning more than 26 years he has served in a range of roles in both provincial and metropolitan areas. He has served in both general and investigative branches before becoming part of the Police Executive, when he was appointed District Commander for Northland in 2001.

"He was subsequently appointed commander of one of our largest metropolitan districts, Waitematä, in 2006 and was promoted to Assistant Commissioner: Operations, based at Police National Headquarters in 2008.

He took over executive responsibility for Crime and Investigations in 2009.

"The breadth and depth of Viv's understanding of operational policing, combined with his firm and effective leadership style will add a valuable perspective to the resource management position." Mr Broad said.

Deputy Commissioner Rickard's appointment is effective immediately.

Mr Rickard is married with 2 children.

He is of Te Arawa descent on his mother's side and Ngati Porou on his father's.
