Southern Police Want the Safest Roads over Queen's Birthday Weekend

1 min read

Southern District Police are going to be out and about over Queen's Birthday Weekend, working to ensure that Southland and Otago roads are the safest in the country, says Southern District Road Policing Manager, Inspector Andrew Burns.

"With the annual Brass Monkey Rally being held in Oturehua in Central Otago, police will be monitoring speeds on all our roads and anybody exceeding the speed limit by more than 4 kilometres an hour can be expected to be stopped and ticketed," he says.

"Road safety is everyone's responsibility. Don't drink and drive, don't exceed the speed limit, wear your seatbelt, remain within your lane and drive to the conditions. These simple rules will ensure the safety of everyone using the roads and will reduce trauma," he says.

"The most effective tool we have to keep you and your family alive is enforcement of road rules. Drivers and their passengers can assist police by ensuring they comply with the rules."

The official Queen's Birthday Weekend holiday period begins at 4pm on Friday 4 June and ends at 6am on Tuesday 8 June 2010.
