Police warn against storing large sums of cash on site

Hamilton Police are urging business owners to consider their security arrangements and question the necessity of holding large sums of cash on site following a weekend burglary.

City Area Commander, Inspector Rob Lindsay, said officers were alerted to the break-in at a Te Rapa business early Saturday morning.

"It appears thieves have used tools to remove a cabinet safe and allegedly made off with a sizeable amount of cash.

"With a variety of banking and secure storage services available Police are wondering why businesses would need to store large denominations of cash on site, doing so puts not only your site but your staff and customers at risk," he said.

Mr Lindsay said the Te Rapa burglary was one of 33 to occur over the weekend which is above average and cast a shadow over what had been a successful period in terms of arrests.

"Over the same period our officers were able to arrest 11 people and charge them with either burglary or being unlawfully on properties. This included the arrest of two men and a woman on Beerescourt Rd following a call to Police by a concerned neighbour.

"In another incident a handler and his dog tracked two men for an hour before arresting them after they'd been seen acting suspiciously around a home, that's pretty good work considering at one stage the officer and dog ended up taking a plunge in a pool during the track."

Mr Lindsay said the good work from City staff was in a lot of cases in response to calls from the public about suspicious activity.

"We can only act on what we know about and we encourage people to continue to ring us if they see something suspicious- it's about safer communities together."
