Were you on the road between Christchurch and Oamaru in the early hours of yesterday (Thursday 13 May) morning?
Oamaru Police are interested in hearing from anyone who may have seen a light-coloured, grey two-door 1995 Nissan Skyline GTS (similar to the one shown in the attached pictures) on the road between Christchurch and Oamaru early on Thursday morning.
The inquiries are part of the investigation into a crash in which an 18-year-old South Canterbury man, travelling on a motorbike, died north of Pukeuri on State Highway One.
The Nissan Skyline was found burnt out on Horse Gully Road, 15km inland from the scene where the man died. A scene examination at this site by a specialist crash investigation team is expected to be completed later today.
"We're working on establishing who owns the car and are interested in hearing from anyone who may have seen it travelling on SH1 in the Richmond/Papakaio (Oamaru) between 0330 and 0430 yesterday morning," said Detective Senior Sergeant Colin Blackie.
Specialist crash investigators are also continuing to examine the scene where the motorcyclist died and this scene examination is also expected to be completed later this afternoon.
Police would not comment on any possible link between the two scenes.
"Until we have completed all of our investigations and have all the information we need, we're not prepared to comment on any possible link or on why we might believe there is a link," said Detective Senior Sergeant Blackie.
"It's possible that this car was involved in some way, and we would like any one who knows of a person or people who may been on the road in this make and model car around this time to contact Oamaru Police on (03) 433 1400. If you are more comfortable providing information anonymously, you can do this by calling Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111."
While next of kin have been informed, the name of the man who died will not be released until he is formally identified. This is likely to take place tomorrow.
Around a dozen police staff have been working to investigate the crash.
