Hamilton Police are crediting a City high school's effective emergency procedures in playing a major part in de-escalating an incident that led to the arrest of a student this morning.
Senior sergeant Pete Van De Wetering said Police were called to the Hamilton Girl's High School grounds shortly before lunch.
"Following on from an earlier disagreement it appears a pupil brought some knives into the school grounds and threatened other students. Those students informed school staff and a female teacher was able to persuade the girl to surrender the knife.
"The teacher was too upset to be interviewed at the time and Police are still yet to speak to her."
Mr Van De Wetering said officers arrived to find the school in lock down mode, a standard operating procedure established between schools and Police when dealing with serious incidents.
"The lockdown was carried out to facilitate an accurate accounting of all pupils and bring some reassurance to students while they ate their lunch. Officers attending arrested a 15-year-old girl and brought her back to the Hamilton Police Station."
Those interviews are currently still underway.
"Though no injuries were suffered this was still a very serious incident," said Mr Van De Wetering.
"That the matter was able to resolved with a minimum disruption is a testament to the emergency procedures in place and obviously some very good work by the teacher involved."
