Hamilton Police are applauding the actions of members of the public who intervened to save a girl being brutally beaten while other girls while walking along a busy City road yesterday afternoon.
Detective Sergeant Neville Ross of the Hamilton CIB said the young girl suffered a broken tooth and a large cut to her face in the attack which took place on a footpath on the Boundary Rd Bridge about 4pm.
"She was attacked by three girls, a 16-year-old and two 15-year-olds, and was quite badly beaten," said Mr Ross.
"Fortunately even more serious injuries were avoided thanks to the timely intervention of passing motorists who stopped and came to the girl's rescue, seeing off her attackers."
Mr Ross said it was this assistance from the public that assisted responding Police to may quick arrests of the offenders a short distance away on River Rd.
"This type of attack could leave you quite cynical about where Hamilton as a community is heading but for the brave actions of the public who made the decision that they weren't going to tolerate this kind of behaviour, it's what the term 'safer communities together' is all about," he said.
One of the offenders was been taken into secure custody by Child Youth and Family while the remaining two girls have been remanded in custody to appear in the Hamilton Youth Court on Monday.
