Christchurch Police are continuing with their investigation into the death of a new born or very young baby, whose body was found yesterday at an address in Hornbrook Street, Sydenham.
Detective Inspector Tom Fitzgerald says that the inquiry team is keen to hear from anyone who may know a woman who has recently been in late term pregnancy and who does not now have a new baby or a cohesive story or reason for the child's absence. This could be from late last year until now.
"We need to find the child's mother. Someone will have knowledge of a recently late term pregnant woman who now does not have a child," he says. "Family, friends, a care giver, midwife or GP may have the information we need."
The post mortem will be conducted this morning and may indicate closer timings, says DI Fitzgerald.
The child's body was located on the property of 14 Hornbrook Street, a 14 room boarding house, and the inquiry team is seeking everyone who has lived there in the last six months to speak with them.
"We will locate them all but it would help us if anyone who has lived there recently could contact the team at Christchurch South Police, as soon as possible, phone 363 7400."
DI Fitzgerald will be available to meet media at Christchurch South at 1.30pm this afternoon.
