Fifteen people were arrested and a further 46 people ejected by police from the Westpac Stadium during today’s one-day cricket international between New Zealand and Australia.
Senior Sergeant Jason Ross said those arrested face a variety of charges including disorderly behaviour, offensive behaviour, possession and smoking of cannabis.
Police were generally pleased with the 15,000 strong crowd’s attitude with no throwing of objects at the players.
"The crowd was pretty hyped up towards the end as the match came down to the wire," Senior Sergeant Ross says. "They were vocal but overall we were pretty pleased with the way the night went."
He said those ejected from the ground were intoxicated, and many of them were people who had smuggled spirits into the stadium. "They were either drunk or misbehaved in some way but not to the extent to warrant arrest.
"We’d said from the outset we wanted people to have fun but not at the expense of other people’s enjoyment of the game," he said.
