About the time of the incident an off duty Canterbury police officer was travelling to the West Coast when he came across a road work gang administering first aid to the injured man.
He followed a vehicle believed to be involved in an unmarked car and a pursuit ensued. The vehicle was stopped in West Melton with road spikes by staff from Selwyn, STU and Highway Patrol. AOS had been deployed but were not present.
