1 min read

The body of the man killed in a vehicle crash in Onehunga was removed from the Captain Springs Rd and Neilson St intersection where he died, at about 2.30pm.

Police Serious Crash Unit is investigating the fatality which occurred at 11.29am, 17 minutes after a Police pursuit was initiated in Motions Rd. The Police Complaints Authority is also investigating the circumstances around the man's death.

The crashed vehicle, a white 1986 Mitsubishi Pajero, was stolen from Manukau City at about 3pm on October 31. Auckland City Police are also investigating a November 4 Parnell burglary complaint where a witness described that vehicle being used.

The driver of this morning's fatal crash had been stopped for questioning about a traffic infringement on Surrey Cres in Grey Lynn at 11.11am by an officer in a patrol car. Though the driver pulled over on Surrey Cres, he drove off before the Police officer had a chance to speak with him.

The registration of the Pajero was checked during the ensuing pursuit and it was then that it was identified as stolen.

Police are making inquiries to try and identify the crash victim. Roads around the crash scene are open to traffic, except for the westbound lane on Neilson St which is still closed.
