Lower Hutt search for gunman over

1 min read

Lower Hutt Police say the search for a man who pointed what was believed to be a firearm at an officer in Naenae this morning is now over.

A 21-year-old man voluntarily turned himself at Lower Hutt Police station shortly after 6pm tonight.

Inspector Geoff Gwyn, Lower Hutt Police Response Manager, said the man is currently speaking with officers. No further details are available this evening.

"The important thing is that today's search, which lasted about nine hours, is now over," Inspector Gwyn said. "It's been a worrying and long day for many people including the public, Lower Hutt Police and the Armed Offenders Squad.

"We've put a lot of effort into background inquiries and searching addresses. This coupled with information from the public and help from the media in ensuring people were aware of the situation has helped us enormously," he said. "We thank people for their assistance."
