Take your time, check your mirrors and if in doubt check it out- even if it means exiting your vehicle is the message from Waikato Police after a second child was driven over in 24 hours.
Sergeant Dave Litton of the Waihi Police said officers were alerted by ambulance staff of a 21-month-old girl suffering serious head injuries after she was run over by a car exiting the driveway of a Köhanga reo at a marae near Bowentown about 8.15am.
"The girl was being transported to Tauranga Hospital by ambulance described to us as being in a serious but non-life threatening condition," he said.
This latest incident follows the death of a two-year-old child run down in a driveway near Whatawhata yesterday and a similar incident in Hamilton two weeks ago in which another child was injured when run over by a relative's car.
"We're talking about very, very high stakes here," said Mr Litton.
"When you consider what's at stake Police urge drivers to double check their way is clear and if you have any doubt at all that your way may not be clear get out of your vehicle and check, a couple of seconds could avoid another tragedy," he said.
