Police investigating a shooting near Norsewood, are naming 46-year-old David John Bourke from Wanganui as a man they want to question in relation to the incident.

David Bourke is described as European, 170cms tall, stocky build with short greying hair.

SH2 remains closed with a number of cordons in place as armed police continue to search the area for the gunman who is described as wearing a yellow jacket.

Advice to residents is still to stay inside locked premises if possible, and to remain vigilant. Any suspicious activity should be reported to police immediately and the man should not be approached if seen. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Diversions are in place but the routes are not ideal with some gravel roads, and adverse weather has made driving difficult.

Operations Manager Inspector David White said: "The focus remains public safety and locating the gunman. Our enquiries to date suggest that David Bourke may be involved in this incident and it is a matter of urgency that we locate and question him. If anyone knows of Mr Bourke's whereabouts or has had any contact with him in the last 48 hours we would ask that they contact us immediately."

Anyone who has any information which might assist this investigation is asked to contact the Palmerston North Crime Line on 0800 808585.

Media enquiries should be referred to Communications Manager Kim Perks on 06 351 2546 or 027 234 8256.
