An elderly man is in a critical condition at Waikato Hospital following an incident on SH1 in Cambridge this morning.

Initial indications are the 82-year-old man stepped into the path of a westbound car on Cambridge's Queen St (SH1) near the KFC restaurant, intending to cross the road.

The man was struck down by the car and suffered critical head injuries. The driver of the car stopped at the scene and has been spoken to by Police.

He was taken by ambulance to Waikato Hospital where it is believed he is in the Intensive Care Unit.

The Waikato Serious Crash Unit is investigating the crash and it is too early to say what, if any, charges will eventuate.
