Tens of thousands of people kept Wellington’s entertainment spots humming throughout the night after last night’s rugby international in the Capital.
Police say the size of the crowd was extraordinary with bars and cafes in the Courtenay Place precinct and surrounding areas jammed pack throughout the night.
One officer commented it was the busiest he’d seen the city in 27 years policing.
The crowd was largely good natured although some drunken behaviour, mainly from locals, became apparent from 3.30am on. Police praised the friendliness of people, particularly the overseas visitors, which helped ease any potential problems.
Road closures which had kept Courtenay Place between Cambridge Terrace and Taranaki Street free from traffic throughout the weekend worked extremely well and the roads have now reopened.
From 5pm last night police made 31 arrests for offences including theft, detoxication, breach of the peace, disorderly behaviour, assault, intentional damage, breach of the peace, possession of a class B drug for supply, supply of methamphetamine and obstruction. Three of the arrests were for breaches of the liquor ban.
Four of the arrests were made at the Stadium – one for detoxication and three Lions supporters for running onto the pitch after the game. They were later released without charge.
Four other people were ejected from the Stadium on minor matters.
