Victoria Police concur with probable hoax assessment

1 min read

Overseas advice supports New Zealand Police's assessment that the alleged foot and mouth threat is a hoax, said Assistant Commissioner for Crime Reduction and Public Safety, Peter Marshall.

"The letter has been thoroughly examined and an evaluation made of its contents. The assessment is that the letter presents a very low level of threat," said Mr Marshall.

Independent advice has been sought from Victoria Police experts who support the conclusions reached by New Zealand Police.

"This is a serious criminal offence to extort money and threaten New Zealand's economy," said Mr Marshall.

"It is also a waste of Police time and resources which could be put to better use. Our focus now is on the investigation to identify the letter writer and bring this whole matter to a close."

Police will continue to provide support for MAF operations on Waiheke Island for as long as required.
