Australian rescued on Mt Cook

1 min read

At 10.30 a.m. on Sunday the 13th March 2005 the Aoraki /Mt Cook Mountain Rescue Team received a call from Mueller Hut in the Mt Cook National Park.

The team responded to an incident near the Waihï Glacier.

A 52 year old man had slipped 60 metres down a snow face onto rocks, injuring himself.

His two companions went to Mueller Hut and raised the alarm.

A team of three rescuers flew to the scene and found the man had serious injuries including a broken tibia and fibula.

Peter David JARVIS, an Australian residing in Christchurch, was stropped out from the glacier and then flown to Timaru hospital.

Team Leader, Andrew (Athol) Welsh, said that the rescue was made difficult due to heavy cloud conditions in the area at the time.

Excellent flying by the Helicopter Line Pilot, Russell GUTSHLAGE, in adverse conditions made the rescue possible.

This rescue ended a busy week for the Aoraki/Mt Cook Rescue Team.

Any inquiries to Andrew Welsh, DOC, Mt Cook. (Photos available).
