Community safety options developed for Miramar

1 min read

Wellington Police and Miramar business and community groups are working together to develop the concept of a volunteer staffed community office in the suburb.

Inspector Marty Grenfell, Wellington Police Area Commander, says this decision was reached at a meeting this afternoon attended by police and Miramar based business and community representatives.

The meeting was called after concerns were raised that police were not renewing the lease on the current Community Constable's office. Instead the officer is relocating to the Kilbirnie Community Policing Centre with an expanded responsibility for the wider Eastern Suburbs.

"Today's meeting was very constructive and was an opportunity for the views of those attending to be canvassed," he says. "The strength of the community is in its volunteers and we are working together on a concept for a community run office with links to and support from police."

Inspector Grenfell says the meeting also acknowledged that the newly named Eastern Suburbs Community Constable will now work from Kilbirnie, but he will also spend time in Miramar and retain links to the suburb.

"I'm buoyed by the strength of the volunteer concept, their networks and support for community safety," Inspector Grenfell says.
