Wellington Police say they're reasonably happy with the behaviour of 34,000 people attending the Axa New Zealand International Sevens at Westpac Stadium over the weekend.
Inspector Paul Berry, Wellington Area operations manager, says police removed 40 people from the Stadium during the two days, 25 of whom were arrested. Fourteen people will face court charges for offences including assaults, fighting, male assaults female, disorderly behaviour, possession of cannabis and trespass.
The other 11 were later released for breaching the peace.
"The crowd was happy and so were we," Inspector Berry says. "It was a couple of hot days and there was a lot of alcohol consumed, but people seemed to be pacing themselves and taking plenty of water and food on board too."
Police used their own 'yellow' and 'red' cards to good effect to quell any anti-social behaviour. "The crowd seemed to like it. Several of the staff commented they'd been thanked for stepping in and warning people to tone down their antics so those nearby could enjoy what was happening in the stands and down on the ground."
