Delays will remain in place on SH1 south of Huntly for some time today after a truck lost its load of groceries after crashing early this morning.
The B-train truck and trailer unit was carrying a load of groceries when it crashed just south of Huntly at 4.15am today. Police say the truck crossed the centreline and tipped over a small bank on the side of the road.
It also crashed into two power poles and a transformer. Power lines came down over the truck and emergency services had to wait until the power was disconnected before they could reach the injured driver. Power was cut to some rural homes for a short time. The fallen power lines also sparked a fire in roadside grass.
The truck driver was taken to Waikato Hospital with minor injuries.
The truck's load spread over much of the highway and police say it may take several hours for it to be cleaned up by hand. One southbound lane is currently open and diversions for north-bound traffic will remain until the road is cleared.
