Witnesses sought for Wainuiomata shooting

1 min read

Lower Hutt CIB is appealing for further witnesses to yesterday’s shooting in Wainuiomata.

Detective Senior Sergeant Soni Malaulau, head of Lower Hutt CIB, says detectives have spent the last 24 hours interviewing a number of witnesses to piece together events leading up to the shooting at an August Avenue address.

"We’d like to hear from other people who may have been driving past the Coast Road and August Avenue area, or on public transport in the area, mid to late afternoon," Detective Senior Sergeant Malaulau says.

"These people may have seen an altercation or a fight around the Coast Road and August Avenue scene and have information which would be helpful to our inquiries."

Witnesses are asked to call Lower Hutt CIB on telephone 560 2600.

The male victim of the shooting is recovering in Wellington Hospital from pelvic injuries. Another man, in his 30s, has been arrested and appeared in the Lower Hutt District Court today charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm and wounding. He has been remanded in custody until tomorrow.

Police and ESR are today continuing their scene investigation, and the Wellington Police District Specialist Search Group has been used to search the property for evidence including firearms rounds and cartridges.
