The Serious Crash Unit and ESR scientists are examining the scene of a crash on the Northwestern motorway.
The crash occurred at about 3am this morning between the Newton Rd and Bond St over bridges in the westbound lanes. One male was taken to Auckland City Hospital with critical injuries.
One lane was kept open at all times and crash investigators worked to allow a second lane to be open by 7:30am as traffic flows began to increase.
Police are conscious of the delays but say the scene of the crash has to be treated as a crimescene so one lane remains closed. Motorists are asked to consider using alternative routes to avoid that stretch of motorway if possible.
Acting Sergeant Stu Kearns of the Serious Crash Unit says, "Police believe a second vehicle was involved in the crash and left the scene. But at this stage it would be speculation to say what caused the crash," says Acting Sergeant Kearns.
Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen a white Toyota Levin on the motorway at about 3am to contact the Serious Crash Unit.
