Police are working with Immigration officials on a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to develop a closer working relationship, formalise existing procedures and improve processes relating to the removal of illegal migrants.
Assistant Commissioner (Crime Reduction and Public Safety) Peter Marshall said Police already work with Immigration officials at District level when requested by Immigration to assist with relation to the identification and apprehension of illegal migrants.
Mr Marshall said the MOU will formalise arrangements and take it a few steps further to provide Police and Immigration staff with a formal process to bring about speedier transfer of information in dealing with illegal migrants.
The MOU will cover shared issues such as execution of removal orders, deportation orders and process, refused entries at borders, criminal investigations and information sharing. It is planned to ask the Commissioner and the General Manager for Immigration to consider the MOU in the next month.
